After reading the following lines, you’ll no doubt be asking yourself the question, “Should metalheads simply create their own record books?”
Let’s Rock 😎

These days, Guinness World Records isn’t what it used to be. If originally it was a register of the world’s most amazing things and people. Today, it has become a strange collection of dubious achievements, such as putting as many tarantulas in your mouth as possible. 🤔

One thing unquestionably missing from the world record book is a section devoted to rock music, but what would be in it? Let’s take a look at 7 amazing achievements in rock and metal that should have been recognized as records but aren’t…

7) The Greatest Rock Band Performance

There is indeed a performance of the style in the official Guinness register. But it’s currently occupied by a Chinese collective of 953 musicians who performed in Tianjin in 2016. And yet, we’ve all seen the Rockin’1000 performances that eclipsed the Chinese performance, bringing together around 1,200 musicians playing a whole range of popular songs. 🎤
Although the events were meticulously documented, the Rockin’1000 organizers never contacted the Guinness committee, never submitted an application for a certificate, and never obtained it as they should have. So here’s the world’s greatest rock band not “officially” the world’s greatest rock band.

6) The longest recorded scream of a metalhead

There’s no such category in the official record, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be. The closest Guinness World Record is the loudest scream, which is really disappointing compared to a metallic scream… A much more complex performance than a simple loud scream. But then, the true metalhead doesn’t really need that to live.
For a “pure scream”, you can’t really beat the late Chester Bennington and his epic 17-second scream on “Give Up”. It’s even more impressive when you consider that it hits a very high note. Check out this video and feel free to tell us what you think in the comments.

If you’re into roaring-style screams, check out Austrian deathcore band Castiel and their song “Phantom”, which features a 30-second scream that sounds like it was achieved through studio magic (but is actually real). The fact that the singer regularly emits live roars only strengthens their claim for the longest metallic scream ever. 🗣 It must be something to see that from the audience. Now all you have to do is book your concert ticket!

5) The Greatest Metal Concert

The biggest rock concert is officially Rod Stewart’s New Year’s concert he gave in Brazil with over four million people in attendance.
But when it comes to metal, one concert stands out from all the rest. The Monsters of Rock festival held in Moscow in 1991 was the first concert by Western metal bands just after the fall of the USSR. What’s more, the concert was free, which meant that all the ex-Soviets hungry for freedom and good music flocked to the Tuschino airfield to see Metallica, AC/DC, Pantera and Black Crowes perform… 🎸 There were several attendance reports, but the number of people who came to the concert that day was in the region of 1.5 million. That’s quite a lot of people.

4) The Fastest Tempo in a Metal Sound

When we talk about the fastest songs, we immediately conjure up Napalm Death’s “You Suffer”. But what’s the fastest metal song in terms of tempo? That would probably be Spawn of Possession’s “Scorched”. The song spins at an astonishing 310 BPM, making any attempt to perform it a feat of agility and speed for the musician. ⚡️ Not for everyone. For that alone, it should be in the record books.

3) Biggest Metal Band

The world’s most profitable artists are usually found in pop or hip-hop, but you’d be surprised how big Metallica has gotten over the years. Having sold $1.4 billion worth of tickets, the thrash metal giants are among the highest-paid musicians in the world. And that’s just concert tickets. The band has gone far beyond the realm of metal and secured a well-deserved place in music history, on a par with the likes of Michael Jackson and the Beatles. 🤘

2) Best-selling rock album

Talking about best-selling albums can be tricky, because the number of records sold differs depending on who you ask. While labels always put the highest number of records sold to boost sales, the amount of certified sales is always much lower… For example, AC/DC claims to have sold 50 million copies of “Back In Black”, but the number of certified copies is 29.4 million. It’s not a small figure, but it’s far from matching the claims. 🤔
In the Rock category, the certified champion is “Hotel California” by the Eagles with 31.5 million copies sold worldwide, whereas if the claims are to be believed, it’s the aforementioned “Back In Black”. In metal, it’s much simpler. Metallica’s “Black Album” is untouchable, with 25.2 million copies sold. Woow. 😵

7 Rockstar Records Missing From The Guinness Book Of Records

1) Most Productive Rock Artist

This category is the easiest to define in terms of searches. Buckethead, who is undoubtedly insane judging by his creative output, eclipses any other rock artist with over 300 albums released in his catalog. 🎹 While some of these are just glorified demos that range from the bizarre to the WTF-weird, many of the entries are albums of more or less traditional music. Even the runner-up, Frank Zappa, with his 109 albums, would have been impressed…

Together we’ve just listed 7 performances by rock artists that appear nowhere in the record books. Now you know all about the injustice that fuels metal culture. It’s a bit of a shame, but at the same time we don’t really care. As long as we metalheads know about them, it’s all okay!
