History of the Devils Disciples Moto Club
The Devils Diciples motorcycle club was founded in Fontana, California, in 1967. It had six founding members, each represented by a spoke in the club crest. The word “disciples” was specially spelled “diciples” for the club’s name. In 1969, the club expanded with a chapter in Michigan. That same year, the Paladins Motorcycle Club also established itself in Alabama, West Virginia, Ontario and Kentucky. The club also expanded into Ohio in 1970. 🛡️
The crest was standardized between the various groups representing the club, and the letters “FTW” were added in 1977. The late 1970s also saw the formation of the Arizona Devils Diciples clan, which was one of the most violent in MC history. In the early 1980s, the Indiana motorcycle club called Gladiators Motorcycle Club was disbanded and replaced by a new Devils Diciples Motorcycle Club clan. Like most other large motorcycle clubs, the Devils use big bikes as their trademark.

⇒ 1973 – A party is held in Flint, Michigan, to which members of Fly-In Wheels MC are invited. A fight breaks out between the members, and four bikers are killed. This was the first major blow to the gang at the time. The bereaved families are in mourning.
⇒ 2002 – The police launch a major investigation into the club’s activities. Members don’t know it yet, but they’re being watched and hounded wherever they go… Day and night, the forces of law and order are watching them in their homes, in the places they frequent, and key members are bugged.
⇒ 2003 – Members of the Devils Diciples’ Arizona clan break the club’s internal rules. They are attacked by other members. In the Arizona clubhouse, the offending bikers are bound with duct tape and zip ties before being beaten, thrown into the back of a pickup truck and abandoned in the desert. 😵
⇒ 2006 – The federal district court in Detroit convicts two members of the Devils Diciples. Five other accomplices are also convicted of manufacturing crystal meth. Entire laboratories were dismantled and destroyed by law enforcement.
⇒ 2009 – During a raid, 18 club members are arrested. Authorities discovered 42 firearms, 3,000 rounds of ammunition, a large sum of cash and counterfeit goods. Police describe the finds as a “commando stash”.
⇒ 2012 – The FBI arrests 31 members of the Devils Diciples MC in Michigan and Alabama. A significant quantity of weapons and ammunition is seized during the investigation. A total of eight laboratories for the production of crystal meth are dismantled, along with biker rings bearing racist symbols and a huge quantity of drugs.
⇒ 2015 – MC members Victor Carlos Castano, Michael Kenneth Rich and David Randy Drozdowski are all convicted of multiple violations of the law. Victor Castano and Randy Drozdowski are convicted for their involvement in extensive methamphetamine trafficking. Victor Castano is also convicted of cannabis trafficking. 🍃 However, he is found not guilty of methamphetamine possession. Michael Rich is found guilty of manufacturing marijuana.
⇒ 2016 – Scott Arlis Thomas, president of the Devils’ Boise, Idaho, clan, is charged with drug and weapons possession. On August 10, 2016, he pleads not guilty to charges of intentional possession of methamphetamine.
Devils MC Creators Fall
The club’s longtime national president, Jeff Garvin Smith, aka “Fat Dog,” is charged with multiple violations of the law, ranging from conspiracy to conduct illegal gambling activities to manufacturing, distributing and possessing illegal substances.
The former national president of the Devils Diciples was sentenced to life imprisonment for racketeering and drug trafficking. Evidence showed that under Smith’s 64-year-old leadership, individuals were beaten and raped. 🔫 According to the Attorney General’s office, Smith, a Mount Clemons native, even shot a member of the Devils Diciples. The motive for the crime was violation of club rules. In August 2008, he violently assaulted the girlfriend of another Diciples member, because he felt she was disrespecting him and the gang.
“This defendant’s life sentence reflects the severity of the violence he committed,” said Special Agent in Charge Timothy R. Slater of the FBI’s Detroit Division.
Condemnation of Club President
The former DDMC national president was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 13, 2018. The news was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider after a six-month jury trial in 2014-2015. The trial took place in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. ⚖️
Following a second trial that lasted four months in 2015, other Devils members were sentenced to prison terms. In total, eight members of the Diciples motorcycle club were convicted in these two separate trials.
These included the national president (Smith), the national vice-president, the clan leader and three others. Their involvement in various criminal acts such as assault, production and trafficking of crystal meth, involvement in illegal firearms activities, perjury before the law, organized gang violence, murder and rape… 🧐
“This partly puts an end to years of effort by the federal government to dismantle the dangerous organized biker gang. They have wreaked havoc on innocent victims across the United States. For more than three decades, they spread fear, violence and their toxic drugs throughout Michigan and the country,” said U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider.
“The scope of the crimes committed by members of this outlaw motorcycle gang is staggering. They have evaded justice for years by intimidating witnesses and obstructing justice at every level. It’s fitting that the national president of the Devils Diciples should spend the rest of his life in federal prison. These convictions help ensure the safety of the communities and all the people they have wronged.”
An Organization of “Biker Bandits”
In addition to Smith, Devils Diciples national clan leader Cary Dale Vandiver was also sentenced to life imprisonment. Patrick Michael McKeoun, nicknamed “Magoo”, the meth cook, was sentenced to 372 months in prison. On November 8, 2018, Alabama clan leader Michael Rich, aka “Tatu”, was sentenced to 360 months in prison…
On October 26, 2018, four other defendants, convicted by a jury of methamphetamine trafficking, obstruction of justice, violent racketeering crimes and various firearms possession charges, were sentenced. Those convicted were as follows:
- National Vice President Paul Anthony Darrah, aka “Pauli”, 54, of Macomb Township, Michigan.
- “West Coast Boss” Vincent John Witort, aka “Holiday”, 68, from Fontana, California.
- David Randy Drozdowski, aka “D”, 42, from Fair Haven, Michigan.
They were also convicted in a second trial in late 2015 of weapons and methamphetamine trafficking. For decades, the Devils Diciples created regional clans in cities across Michigan, Alabama and beyond. They engaged in criminal activity to protect their interests and make financial profits, which led to their judgment. ⛓
In addition to the four recently convicted defendants, more than 50 Devils Diciples members and associates pleaded guilty. The investigation led to the seizure of more than 60 firearms and over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as the destruction of eight crystal meth production labs across the country.
