What is a gothic drink?
First of all, it’s important to point out that there isn’t really a drink specifically designed for black-clad enthusiasts. Of course, there is no “goth drink that all goths must drink or risk being banned from the community”. Goths are “normal” people, and everyone has their own drink preferences. However, there are some common elements! That’s what we’re going to find out in this article.
Every counter-culture has its own drinking habits, and goths are no exception. Nevertheless, there are some very popular beverages (almost like a veritable “religion” specific to goths) that often recur at gothic gatherings or concerts. Just as hipsters drink beer and female rock fans have their martinis, goths have their own beverage choices. If you find yourself out on the town with goths, or at a darker-than-usual party, here’s what you can usually find when it comes to booze. 🥂
Wine
All goths love wine! Ahaha. Although we know it’s a cliché, red wine is widely preferred to white wine, although a dry white is rarely refused. Champagne is almost universally avoided because, as a rule, goths aren’t big fans of bubbles.
In fact, we put the question to our community on social networks, and few goths are wine experts. You’ll probably never see two of them arguing over a great vintage. Most of them are content with grocery store wines in the 10 to 20 euro a bottle range. And wine in cubes is perfectly acceptable, even preferred by the most thrifty goths.
✔️ Bordeaux is more popular than Burgundy for a successful party. Pinot noir is also a good choice! When it comes to white wine, there are no strict rules. All are welcome, as long as they’re not too sweet.
Presentation is just as important as the quality of the beverage, so we recommend that you welcome your guests with glasses… made of glass, of course! It’s more convivial and pleasant. It’s important to note that many Goths are also lovers of beautiful glasses and place importance on their decoration. Patterns with spider webs and skulls are perfect for making a splash.
The Beer
Goths are generally very picky when it comes to beer. It’s a must-have if you’re having goths over for a party, for example. It’s the favorite drink at concerts. Without a doubt, it’s the first choice if we had to choose just one drink! 🍻
Most goths look down their noses at American beers… Thick German beers, which almost require chewing, are favored. Guinness is also popular. But honestly, any popular beer served in bars will do.
Beer is particularly popular in summer, for a quick refresher. Because yes, when you’re dressed from head to toe in leather, you get hot, so you drink, and quite often find yourself completely drunk. It’s also interesting to note that ciders are gaining in popularity. The two pair perfectly as you move from aperitif to meal (cider at the table, of course).
The Vodka
No Gothic freezer would be complete without a bottle of vodka. Vodka is the preferred choice for making successful gothic cocktails. For some mythical reason, this Russian drink is ubiquitous at parties with a majority of goths, and is the one most chosen in nightclubs and bars.
There are several types of vodka, including licorice-infused vodka and all the others. Licorice infusion is a herb found in South Asia and Central Africa. Rich in tannin, licorice doesn’t really affect the flavor of the vodka, but it does soften the cocktail considerably. 🍸 Its biggest secret lies in the fact that it darkens the drink…. See where this is going? It adds a dark, morbid touch that every gothic appreciates immensely. If you want to make a successful cocktail, all you have to do is choose licorice-infused vodka!
For some goths, vodka just isn’t their thing. In that case, there’s nothing like turning to rum. It’s easy to prepare the same cocktail recipes as with vodka, simply by changing the base spirit. 🧊
L’Absinthe
Ah, absinthe. Every goth has tried it, and every goth has embraced it! Well, not all. But one thing’s for sure, it’s a drink that’s often found at a gothic gathering and that’s just as well, because it’s not one of the more common drinks. And we know that “uncommon” is our specialty.
Generally speaking, absinthe is a drink reserved for special occasions. It’s not the bottle you take out for a drink at the end of the day after work. It makes a splash at a birthday party, for example. 🎁
The fact of sharing a bottle is an important event, as it connects us to all the sad and dark artists of the past. The romantic aspects of absinthe are just as important as its intoxicating qualities. If you’re looking for a cool gift for a goth, absinthe is a great choice!
The SnakeBite
We couldn’t leave you without telling you about one of the most famous cocktails in gothic culture. SnakeBite is a very simple drink to make, as it contains just two ingredients: cider and beer.
Simply pour in the chilled cider first, then gently pour in the beer. You’ll get an interesting overlay in your glass for a cocktail that takes no more than a minute to prepare and is more original than a simple beer or cider. Speaking of glass, we recommend using a tumbler-type glass for this drink.
