Making a Skull Pumpkin

Here are the elements needed to create the most diabolical pumpkin ever:

  • A pumpkin (preferably the largest)
  • A knife
  • A vegetable peeler
  • A thumbtack or pen
  • A tape

You’re free to decide whether you’d like to use a template to draw the shape. However, since we’re not all great artists, we’ve provided a template here! You can easily print out the image just below by saving it. It will serve as a guide to help you draw the skull design on your pumpkin. If this template doesn’t suit you entirely, feel free to explore Pinterest or other sources to find another skull image. ☠️

Next, cut off the top of the pumpkin and clean it completely, removing the seeds and pulp. Once the inside is clean, you can tape your skull design to the pumpkin.

Now it’s time to draw the outlines. Some people prefer to draw with a pencil, while others use a knife. The choice is yours. The most common method is to hold the big pumpkin on your lap or put it on a table to be at the right height. 💀

You can also use additional tools if necessary, such as a saw, screwdriver or any other tool you feel comfortable with, in addition to those mentioned above.

Our design features many shapes and details, so you may choose to drill only the contours of the main shapes you wish to carve. The details may seem more difficult, but it’s up to you to decide how detailed you want your pumpkin to be. Keep a copy of the drawing handy to help you with the finer details, which you can draw once you’ve removed the model from your pumpkin.

We suggest you cut out some of the outline shapes with a knife, then use the tip of the vegetable peeler to connect the dots and cut the other shapes deep enough to bring out the skull and crossbones motif. You can also use a cutter or chisel to do most of the work, then proceed with the finishing touches.

Pumpkin Skull Drawing

Many pumpkins are orange, but let’s not forget the white ones… They’re just as devilish! And this time, we’re not going to carve them, but simply draw them. The result is often just as impressive, if not more so, when the two techniques are combined. A white pumpkin with a skull design next to an orange pumpkin carved in the shape of a skull… Halloween takes on a whole new dimension!

For this method, you’ll need the following:

  • A pumpkin
  • A sheet of carbon paper
  • Stick tape
  • A pen
  • A permanent marker

When it comes to permanent marker, we’ve found that some work better than others. So make sure the markers you plan to use are suitable for your pumpkin! ✍️
Start by carefully taping the sheet of carbon paper to the pumpkin. Try to cover only a small part of the carbon paper to avoid leaving a mark on the pumpkin (caused by the tape’s adhesive). Then attach your skull and crossbones design on top, again using the tape.

Tip: Using carbon paper to transfer the design will also work if you want to carve the pumpkin. You can use a toothbrush and water with a little soap to remove any extra carbon after you’ve removed the drawing and paper. Also, if you only have an orange pumpkin, you can paint the area you plan to carve with white acrylic paint.

Use a pen or pencil to outline the skull design. Then remove the model and the sheet of carbon paper, trace over the carbon lines with a permanent marker and fill in the design with the colors of your choice!
