Outlaw motorcycle gangs, also known as the “1%“, have been a problem for the federal government in the United States since the 1960s. Even today, there are motorcycle clubs (MCs) on both coasts. However, only one percent of them are consideredcriminal bikers involved in weapons or drug trafficking.
Although Americans have often idealized biker culture through books and TV series like Sons of Anarchy, outlaw motorcycle gangs continue to play a very important role in organized crime in the USA. ☠️ In recent years, major trials have resulted in charges of drug trafficking, extortion and murder committed by biker gang members.
Outlaw motorcyclegroups are still active in the U.S., and the federal government continues to fight their influence. Let’s take a look at the 10 most notorious of these gangs. 👇
10) The Warlocks
This biker group is mainly active on the East Coast of the USA, numbering around 300 members. The Warlocks have such a bad reputation that many other groups don’t dare associate with them. The gang has a history of extreme and gratuitous violence. They are known to have committed assaults on rival leaders and murders of police officers. 👮♂️
The Warlocks have a strong presence in Pennsylvania and Florida, and if you know anything about the drug culture in these two states, you won’t be surprised to learn that they are heavy users of methamphetamine. A high-ranking gang member was arrested with 5kg of crystal meth the same year four Warlocks were arrested for selling 200kg of crack cocaine.
9) The Highwaymen
Their main territory is Detroit, with several chapters scattered throughout the Midwest and South. They have around 200 members in Detroit. Although the Highwaymen’s modest membership can’t compete with much larger gangs such as the Hells Angels or the Outlaws, they have contributed to crime in Motor City (Detroit) throughout their history.
In 2007, a raid led to the arrest of forty members of this group, with charges as diverse as mortgage fraud, cocaine trafficking and various murders. 👀
8) The Black Pistons
The Black Pistons are present throughout the US, with around 200 members. Sometimes, larger gangs form “support clubs”, which exist solely to perform the dark tasks that even the “1%” don’t dare to do. The Black Pistons are the support club for the much larger MC Outlaws.
This group of bikers is involved in drug trafficking and attacks the Outlaws’ enemies. When a section of the Black Pistons establishes itself in a new town, violent clashes occur with the gangs already present. 🔫
7) Vagos Motorcycle Club
The Vagos operate in the southwestern United States. They have around 4,000 members. The Vagos MC is best known for coordinating drug-smuggling operations with Mexican chapters. Founded in the 1960s with several of the most famous “1%” members, Vagos has been at war with the Hells Angels from the start.
They were involved in one of the most high-profile police operations involving biker groups. The club was accused of booby-trapping police cars and gang buildings. Although evidence points to this being the case, the Vagos sued local law enforcement for defamation, and the case was settled out of court without any gang members receiving jail time. ⚖️
6) Sons of Silence
The Sons of Silence operate from the South to the Midwest, and the group boasts nearly 300 members. This Colorado-based gang is one of the smallest on this list, with just 275 members spread across 30 different states. What they lack in numbers, they make up for in power. 🔥 During a raid in 1999, it was discovered that the Sons had a large arsenal including machine guns, homemade bombs and grenades.
The Sons of Silence needed this power as they had been involved in territorial wars for decades. The gang first rose to prominence in Colorado, Arizona and Kansas by taking on the much larger Outlaws motorcycle club. Today, the Sons of Silence are allied with the Hells Angels for safety’s sake. But that doesn’t mean they’re letting their guard down. Indeed, their alliance with the Hells Angels makes them natural enemies of many smaller MCs. It seems they’re still involved in the same arms race. ⚔️
5) The Pagan’s
This East Coast-based gang has between 200 and 250 members. Originally a non-violent club, the Pagan’s became involved in organized crime in the 1970s under the leadership of John “Satan” Marron. Despite their relatively small membership, the Pagan’s are considered one of the most dangerous and well-organized gangs.
The FBI considers the Pagan’s to be an extremely dangerous organization, due to their links with gangs such as the Aryan Brotherhood and the Italian Mafia. Members of the Pagan’s are regularly involved in arson, bombings and murder. Incidentally, they have a predilection for stockpiling machine guns. 💥
Like many well-known MCs in the country, the Pagan’s are often in conflict with the Hells Angels. They’re even said to be linked to the murder of the vice-president of the Philadelphia Hells Angels chapter in 2005.
4) Bandidos motorcycle club
Bandidos operate mainly in the South, with a strong presence in Texas. They have around 2,500 members. With their large membership, the Bandidos are among the largest motorcycle gangs in America. Although the club was only founded in 1996, it is present in 16 US states and 14 countries. The federal government classifies them as one of the four main MCs (Pagan’s, Hells Angels, Outlaws and Bandidos).
The Bandidos are headquartered in Texas, where they specialize in drug smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border. Their aggressive and successful expansion has been demonstrated by their involvement in crimes as far afield as Norway and Australia.
3) Outlaws MC
The Outlaws are present in the eastern and central United States. Their membership numbers around 1,700. Founded in 1936, The Outlaws is considered the oldest outlaw motorcycle club in the world. The club is still very active today, with over 1,700 members in 176 states. While many MCs vie for control of the drug trade between Mexico and the U.S., the Outlaws retain significant influence over drugs crossing the Canadian border. 🌍
Although the Outlaws dominate the Great Lakes region, they are often in conflict with the Hells Angels, who regularly attempt to take over their territory. Taco Bowman, the Outlaws’ former president, was on the FBI’s most-wanted list before he was jailed for three murders in 1999.
2) Mongols
The Mongols are active in Southern California and number around 1,500 members. Although this group is smaller than many other high-profile gangs, it makes up for its relatively small size with unwavering determination. With around 800 members concentrated mainly in and around Southern California, the gang is powerful and imposing. 💪🏼
Thanks to their alliances with Latino street gangs, the Mongols took control of Southern California and maintain it to this day. Their alliance with these groups is largely based on their shared origins, as the majority of Mongols’ members are Hispanic or Native American. The club was formed after several Latino bikers were refused entry to the Hells Angels because of their origins. ⛔️
The Mongols remain a very violent and active gang. In 2008, sixty members were arrested for drug trafficking, racketeering and murder. This operation led to the arrest of President Ruben “Doc” Cavazos. Subsequently, members of the Mongols were temporarily banned from wearing their crests in public. However, after several years of legal proceedings, a judge determined that the confiscation of the crests was an abuse of power and the Mongols were allowed to wear their colors again. 🏴
This gang is often featured in films about bikers.
1) The Hells Angels
The Hells Angels are present all over the country and have a strong presence in California. They number around 2,500 members. When one thinks of outlaw motorcycle clubs, the Hells Angels often come to mind. The Hells Angels brand has become a full-fledged business, represented by a company in the USA and Canada. This company is suing for copyright infringement, as in the case of the film Wild Hogs. The notoriety of the Hells Angels name contributes to their recruitment.
At last count, the most famous gang had 2,500 members on six different continents. With their ever-growing membership, the Hells Angels are often involved in territorial disputes. Their rivalry with the Mongols for control of California and with the Outlaws for influence in Canada are just two examples of their many clashes with other rival MCs. 🏴☠️
