Finding a good singer is a challenge faced by many rock bands. Some compromise by asking a band member to take on the role of singer. Others take a different approach by having no singer at all! 🎤 Here’s our list of the top 10 rock and metal bands whose music speaks louder than words. Some bands are rather well-known, others less so, but all are worth discovering. 🔥THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS🔥
Instrumental 10: Polyphia
These guys from Texas know how to put a tune together! Called “progressive rock”, they claim their music is more akin to hip-hop than rock. With their new album “New Levels New Devils”, they’ve blossomed into their own musical style. Crazy riffs, strange moments and lots of groove. Enjoy!
Instrumental 9: Chon
Extremely technical and upbeat, these instrus represent CHON in their element. It’s what they do best. This Californian quartet has been impressing with their instrumental music for 11 years now, and they never disappoint. Each of their albums and EPs has its own flavor and vibe, while retaining their overall style. Perfect for listening to good music on a sunny day. Perhaps enjoying life comes down to just that: sunshine and CHON. 😎
Instrumental 8: Astrosaur
These Norwegian post-rockers (although it’s hard to apply a specific genre to them) are relatively unknown. They only have one EP to their credit, but what an EP it is! Deep bass guitar and even deeper bass create a totally unique soundscape. What’s even more astonishing is that there are only three of them in the band. In addition to their EP, they’ve released a cover of Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song”, which is a must-have for all fans of the band… Astrosaur are clearly from another planet. 🪐
Instrumental 7: Plini
Plini is a one-man band. But this guy can compose some of the most avant-garde guitar pieces of the moment. The melodic and technical aspects of his music rival the best, and he’s only at the beginning of his career. This is probably how the future of instrumental guitar music is shaping up, and we can’t wait. 🎸
Plini remains on the lighter side in terms of sound, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t rock from time to time…. He’s also Steve Vai’s new favorite guitarist, which says a lot for purists.
Instrumental 6: Covet
It’s said that a person talented at one thing is talented at everything. This certainly applies to Yvette Young, who not only composes the majority of Covet’s music, but also creates stunning album covers for the band. Covet’s music is light and pleasant to listen to, yet incredibly technical and complex in structure. Perfect for a bike ride in the evening sun.
Yes, it’s true, it’s not pure rock, but it works so well at the end of a concert, when everyone’s already quite warm 😉
Instrumental 5: Toska
It’s rare that a guitarist most people know mainly from YouTube has such a great band. Such is the case with Rabea Massaad. He wrote some excellent songs alongside Rob Chapman in Dorje. But with Toska, he’s really unleashed his creativity. Toska’s latest album, “Fire By The Silos”, was as powerful and beautiful as anything Bea had done before. Heavy, powerful riffs mingle with calm melodies and stunning arrangements. A perfect band if you like heavier instrus. 🥁
Instrumental 4: Intervals
It’s true that Intervals had a singer for one album, but it didn’t become a permanent thing, so they’re still considered an instrumental band. Their music resembles that of their more relaxed counterparts Protest The Hero. Aaron Marshall’s idea suits all progressive rock fans. Line-up changes and vocal experiments have in no way detracted from the band’s style. Playing Intervals on speakers guarantees a good time.
Instrumental 3: Chancer
Chancer is a kick-ass instrumental band from Ireland! They’re relatively new to the music scene, playing since 2017, and have just one EP to their credit. But this band is definitely worth checking out. Their instrus are fresh, well-written and feature a variety of styles. It will be interesting to see how the band develops its style in the future…
If you’re looking for a band to follow, Chancer is it! We’ll be keeping a close eye on them.
Instrumental 2: The Algorithm
And now for something “stranger”. The French blend of progressive metal, djent and electronic dance music certainly isn’t for everyone, but it may be the Holy Grail you’re looking for. 🤷♂️
The project of Rémi Gallego, who now plays guitar while intensely manipulating buttons, has been around for seven years. Their new album was released last year. Their music may seem strange at first, you don’t really know whether to dance or headbang… but it ends up grabbing you by the gut. 😈
Instrumental 1: Animals As Leaders
This band needs no introduction. It’s probably the one you think of when someone mentions instrumental progressive metal. Tosin Abasi has created something unique with this project: the use of an 8-string guitar we’ve never seen before, incredibly complex but memorable songs, jazz techniques in a metal style, and three incredibly talented musicians playing so well together…
Although this band is only 10 years old, it has already influenced many bands and musicians. Even today, they are the kings of instrumental progressive metal. 🎸
Our Bonus: Vulfpeck
It’s not rock, it’s not metal, but we couldn’t help ourselves. This performance by Vulfpeck, hailing from Michigan, is a pure gem. It’s the very definition of “doing things right”. A hugely enjoyable performance that would have been wasted on any other singer. 🎹
