Signification of Gothic Pendants
Whether you’re just looking to get your first Gothic pendant or you’ve been collecting and wearing them for years, have you ever wondered what these symbols represent?
The pendants and the symbols depicted on them are dark and sometimes bewitching, with hidden meanings. 🤫
Rooted in the traditions of the East Germanic tribe in the 2nd century AD, our subculture emerged during the Renaissance. It was at this time that the cultural concept known as “Gothic” was born.
This movement has many connotations, ranging from the raw and barbaric to suffering and darkness. However, other themes such as passion and love are also very present today. All these ideas and visions of the counterculture are sometimes reflected through a pendant. 📿
Whatever your reason for wearing pendants, it’s interesting to know their stories and what they express. So let’s take a look together at everything you need to know about what the various symbols of Gothic pendants really mean.
Here we go 🧛♀️
<1) Pentacle pendant
The pentacle is a five-sided star (pentagram) surrounded by a circle. It’s one of the most common Gothic symbols. The different sides represent the five elements: fire, water, earth, air and spirit. The circle symbolizes wholeness and completeness. Sometimes Goths wear the pentacle upside down to represent Satan and death. 👿
Although not all Goths are Satanists, some wear a gothic pentacle pendant to shock people and thus avoid those who don’t understand their ideology.
2) 666 Pendant
The three numbers 666 are widely known to designate the devil or Satan. They are the symbol of the beast. This symbol is much used by Goths in pendant jewelry.
Some people believe in the mythe of 666 so much that they are genuinely afraid of it. On the other hand, many Goths revere it and use it in their clothing style or through jewelry. 👹
3) Reaper Pendant
The reaper, also known as death, is another well-known symbol found on Gothic pendants.
The Grim Reaper is usually depicted wearing a hood, hiding his face. The figure is always depicted with a scythe. 🔪 Her role is to “harvest” the souls of the deceased.
According to myth, death carries an hourglass. And when the last grain falls, the reaper separates the soul from the body with her blade. It’s also said to be able to prolong or shorten a person’s life. Thus, many believe she can be deceived or bribed to postpone meeting her. Wearing our reaper pendant is one way to delay that appointment. 💀 Discover it by clicking on the image below.
4) Baphomet Pendant
Also known as the Goat of Mendes, Baphomet evolved from the ancient Egyptian god of fertility. Baphomet is a figure with a goat’s head. It comprises binary elements that symbolize the whole universe. In Judeo-Christian culture, the Goat of Mendes is a fallen angel, as evidenced by his wings. This means he is banished from paradise because he is different from the other angels. This is exactly what Goths are looking for when wearing a Baphomet pendant: to stand out from the crowd. 🐐
5) Snake Pendant
The snake is widely revered by pagans and other groups focused on the earth and our world. The snake symbolizes rebirth, as it sheds its skin and renews itself. It also represents evil, fertility and is seen as a link between the spiritual and physical worlds.
It was partly adopted by the Goths because of the role of snakes in biblical history. In the Garden of Eden, the serpent represents sin and temptation. 🐍
6) Skull Pendant
The skull pendant is also one of the main pieces of jewelry used by Goths. Whether you’re into it yourself or not, you probably know someone in your circle who wears jewelry depicting skulls. 💀 The skull pendant is worn for its demonic style, but not only…
Wearing a skull around the neck has several significations. First and foremost, it expresses the relationship between life and death, to show that life is ultimately just a game and that death awaits us all. It’s all about making the most of every moment on earth. And nothing symbolizes death more explicitly than the image of a skull! We’ve selected some of the most beautiful gothic jewelry for you. 7) Ankh pendant
Another common ancient Egyptian symbol used by Goths and worn notably as a pendant is the Ankh. It is also known as the annealed cross. ✝️
The symbol is represented by a looped circle at the top of a cross, giving it the shape of a key. This makes sense, since the Ankh represents the key to life. While the circle symbolizes femininity, the cross represents masculinity. According to myth, the Ankh has the power to awaken the souls of the dead and bring them back to life. It is also used to symbolize eternal life, also known as the key to the Nile.
8) Celtic Knot Pendant
The Celtic knot is often used on Gothic pendants to refer to mysticism, i.e. mysterious, hidden or secret things. 🧐
Since the knot has no beginning or end, it is also known to represent infinity. Various meanings are attributed to it, ranging from the infinite nature of spirit to endless cycles of birth and rebirth. Many Goths also wear it as they believe it acts to prevent illness and bad luck.
9) Spider Pendant
The spider and its web also feature prominently on Gothic pendants. They’re used in part because fear of spiders (arachnophobia) is common. After all, goths like to provoke fear 😉
However, spiders also have deeper symbolic meanings. They represent creativity, destiny and patience. They are also believed to possess the powers of darkness.
The spider weaves its web, just as we weave our own lives. Thus, the spider also represents how we are the architects of our choices and decisions. 🕷
